Clinical and pharmacologic management of hyponatremia with furosemide

Patients

Furosemideis used to treat hyponatremia in patients with normal or corrected serum sodium and/or potassium levels. The primary pharmacologic therapy is IV infusion of furosemide (Furosemide IV) with a diuretic. Furosemide is also given orally in a loop and/or a divided-dose IV infusion for the relief of hyponatremia caused by hypovolemia. It is administered in three divided doses: IV bolus, IV infusion, and IV dosing. The diuretic is given in 1, 2, or 3 mg/kg and/or/or/and/or 2.5 mg/kg of furosemide. The IV infusion is given as a continuous bolus of furosemide. The oral solution is given every 12 hours for continuous infusion. Furosemide is not given intravenously. When the diuretic is stopped, the patient is at a normal blood level of 5-8 mL/min. It is recommended that a patient be treated immediately for hyponatremia and is not allowed to be in hyponatremia unless the patient is having regular or chronic clinical or biochemical monitoring. It is not recommended for use in patients who do not require a diuretic. The oral solution is given in 2.5-3.5 mg/kg IV bolus every 8 hours for continuous infusion.
